Robinson has moved from soul music to food for the soul. The Motown legend has launched Smokey Robinson's Foods. Its first product, Soul Is in the Bowl Gumbo, was introduced in Chicago in February. "I've been a gumbo connoisseur since I was a kid," says Robinson, who played the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival on May 2 and has an Aug. 14 date scheduled at the Paramount Theatre in Denver. The gumbo hits California in May through Safeway and Albertson's stores. It expands to Dallas next month and Robinson hopes to take it nationwide before the end of the year. A portion of the company's profits will be used to further education for minority children.
