Smokey Robinson Returns for a Memorial Performance

NEW YORK, NY, MAY - The Buckingham Hotel, the New York City “home-away-from-home” to generations of music legends, will welcome jazz performers and jazz aficionados alike to New York City, June 12 - 24, as the official host hotel to the 2006 JVC Jazz Festival in New York for the third consecutive year. This year's festival includes more than 300 artists performing the best in jazz, blues, ragtime, swing, R&B and more, in over 100 concerts and events at more than 20 venues throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn.

The storied hotel is located just across the street from Carnegie Hall, the prime venue for the New York concerts, where there will be performances by artists including Smokey Robinson, Etta James, Stanley Clarke, Herbie Hancock, Dave Brubeck, plus many more.

“Last year Paquito D'Rivera and Cachao gave a private performance in the Martinelli Penthouse - it was a quite a moment,” said Hotelier Stephen Shapiro. “With the likes of Smokey Robinson, Etta James and Herbie Hancock performing, this year will be no exception.” The Buckingham has long been host to the world's greatest musical performers; like jazz great Gato Barbieri, piano legend Van Cliburn, Paquito D'Rivera and more.

Starting June 12, Buckingham guests will not only be able to enjoy the Hotel's extensive lending library of history-making Carnegie Hall jazz performances, but will also be eligible to win free electronics provided by JVC, which are being randomly awarded to lucky guests booking their hotel rooms through the JVC promotion during the Festival. JVC, official sponsor of the Jazz Festival, is one of the world's largest manufacturers of high quality audio and video products.

The neighboring, Carnegie Hall officially opens its doors on Friday, June 16, at 8:00 p.m. to New Century: Same Genius featuring Ornette Coleman with Greg Cohen, Denardo Coleman and Tony Falanga. Performances continue throughout the week for a total of eight performances, with Chris Botti and Lizz Wright make their Carnegie Hall debuts in an evening titled, Setting the Style of Spring, and a not-to-miss tribute performance to Lorraine Gordon. JVC Jazz Festival will close out Carnegie Hall with stellar appearances by Herbie Hancock Dave Brubeck and Smokey Robinson.

This year's Festival includes the much anticipated performance by Smokey Robinson, which will wind down the festival at Carnegie Hall, on June 22. Robinson, mostly known for his talents with The Supremes and The Temptations, is back performing his first concert at Carnegie Hall in over 31 years.
